一般屠宰废水预处理的两种主要方法为：气浮和筛滤（过滤孔径1～5mm），气浮主要应用于废水量较小的处理站，其缺点主要是设备复杂、不易管理、运行成本高、卫生条件差；筛滤则主要应用于废水量较大的屠宰废水的预处理，管理方便，运行稳定。屠宰废水中的**物主要为蛋白质和脂肪，该类物质属大分子长链**物，难以被一般的好氧菌直接利用，在其生物降解过程中，一般先通过酶的作用分解成氨基酸、碳水化合物等小分子**物后方可被好氧菌直接利用，因此在屠宰场污水处理设备中酸化水解工序的设置是非常有必要的。
